What is a chiller?

What is a chiller and what is it used for? We can roughly divide them into 2. These are according to the condenser type: Air Cooled Chiller Water Cooled Chiller However, it is also possible to classify them according to the compressor types, efficiency classes, capacities and designs.

The Turkish meaning of Chiller is cooler. Of course, the word cooler is a very general concept. Chiller is the name given to water cooling devices specifically. In other words, we can call it Chiller, Water Cooler.

What is the Working Logic of Chiller?

The working principle of Chiller devices is as follows; The refrigerant is compressed in the compressor and its temperature and pressure are increased. The refrigerant leaving the compressor reaches the condenser in the form of superheated vapor. Depending on the type of condenser, it transfers its heat load to air or water and turns into liquid. After leaving the condenser, the refrigerant reaching the expansion valve (throttling valve) loses pressure after passing through the expansion valve and becomes completely liquid. After the expansion valve, heat transfer occurs between the refrigerant and water (or glycol) in the evaporator, and while the refrigerant evaporates and returns to the compressor, the water coming to the evaporator to cool down is released from the evaporator by cooling down. The cooled water is sent to the required system using a pump.

What are the Types of Chiller Devices?

We can roughly divide them into 2. These are according to the condenser type:

  • Air Cooled Chiller

  • Water Cooled Chiller

However, it is also possible to classify them according to the compressor types, efficiency classes, capacities and designs. Because there are many differences in these issues. Compressor types vary as Scroll, semi-hermetic, screw and centrifugal. Efficiency classes are generally more efficient in centrifugal compressor chillers, but they can also vary according to capacity and desired outlet temperature. According to the designs, there are different designs such as portable wheeled, fixed and containerized. These designs are selected according to the conditions of the application area.

Where are the Chiller Usage Areas?

  • In concrete batching plants, for concrete cooling

  • In plastic injection devices

  • In structures requiring high cooling capacity such as hotels, shopping malls, hospitals, airports, congress centers, data centers and office buildings

  • In spot welding machines

  • In seam welding machines

  • In hydraulic presses

  • In shoe sole machines

  • In acid coating facilities

  • In CNC machines

  • In laboratories and test devices

  • In mining areas

  • For TBM cooling, in metro and tunnel construction

  • In spinning machines

are used.
